I have always been attracted to the curvy and voluptuous shapes. And to me the forms can be a representation of a body. This can be seen in my work by how I have applied my patterns on to the surface, using the forms like a canvas for my patterns and colours. My patterns have been influenced by henna ‘mehndi’ patterns, which are applied onto the body in times of happiness and celebrations. I love how the patterns are drawn onto the body following the curves and angles of it, rather than forming their own path. Henna patterns also represent certain meanings for example: Peacocks represent beauty and flowers represent joy and happiness. I have always been attracted to colour and patterns, and feel that colour affects our lives and moods. I believe that it is something that we take for granted. It is eye catching and grand and can make the smallest thing light up a whole room. I feel the same way about pattern, it is something that we are attracted to, it might not be something that we like but it is something that catches our eye. I decided that I wanted to study further in this material at university as I was fascinated by the beautiful glaze effects and the different processes and techniques. Alot of of my work is inspired by patterns and colours and the energy around these two elements. I have always been drawn to them as I feel that colour affects our moods and patterns symbolise a range of meanings to individuals. I want to create ceramic ware that brings a warmth and uniqueness to people's lives and environments. I currently have three themes in my work - The Marble, Celadon and Tumbler/Vases Range, each completely unique from one another but two exploring the use of colours and patterns merging together and the tumbler/vases exploring the use of glaze colours on simple forms. During this workshop I was able to explore and learn new skills, taking part in Raku and Woodfiring ceramic techniques. I was also able to take part in a old and traditional jewelry making technique called Ashanti. This technique uses wax to create jewelry pieces, which is then placed into a mold and the wax is melted out. Brass or silver balls are then placed into the mold, covered and secured. Once the mold is dry, it is then placed into a coal heated oven and heated till the metal has melted. The mold is taken out, shaken and placed upside down. I first experimented with the traditional celadon green and then used different oxides to create a range of colours. For the forms I wanted pieces that were intricate and delicate to look at allowing the glaze to enhance the body of the shape more and adding patterns that are simplistic, thus my planters were created.
